Joe Cook-Shugart is the chief editor of 1-3-1 Sports. His main focus in writing is on men’s college basketball and bracketology, where he has been successful in accurately predicting the field, including being ranked the most accurate bracketologist for the 2017-2018 men’s college basketball season (Bracketologist Rankings). Joe also took 1st place in the Google Cloud & NCAA Machine Learning Competition for the Women’s NCAA Tournament in 2019 (Contest Results). He leverages machine learning algorithms to aid in his bracketology efforts every season.

Joe is a former basketball player and coach that has an undying passion for the sport. He is also an avid fan of golf, football, baseball, soccer, and tennis. He is an alumnus of the University of Michigan, where he received a degree in Actuarial Mathematics & Mathematics of Finance and Risk Management. Joe has used this degree to pursue a career as a full-time actuary, but also uses some of the skills he developed to perform quantitative analyses on college basketball and fantasy football. In his free time, he enjoys golf, basketball, bowling, running, and weightlifting.
